My take
This was less actiony and a little slower than I remember from my early childhood when Dad read it to Joshie and me. But it was more emotional, philosophical, and moving than I remember. I was so impressed! You can really feel how and why it made it so big and became such a foundational text in sci-fi. It was fun to read while also reading the odyssey and then going to see Christopher Nolan's the odyssey and really thinking about war and all its harm. I'm also editing Peter Conti-Brown's fed history book, and he quotes someone describing WWI as "a war between two armies is really just one army committing suicide". Stunning. Scott Card basically does this in an adolescence sci-fi school adventure story.
